give up smokingWhether you have a smoking addiction or just smoke socially, from time to time, you have probably considered quitting for one reason or the other. Here are a few reasons to give up smoking for good.

Why You Should Quit

Although there are numerous reasons to give up smoking, the number one reason has to be for the sake of your health. Even though some people confound the statistics and suffer no ill effects, there is a definite connection between many health problems and smoking tobacco. The risk of developing some kind of problem increases with the volume of cigarettes that are consumed and the length of time that the person is a smoker.

Here are a few health problems that are thought to result from smoking.

Cancer – Tobacco contains carcinogens. As smoke from a cigarette is generally taken into the lungs through the mouth, the chances of developing lung cancer or cancer of the throat and larynx are increased. The pancreas may also be susceptible to cancer. Again this depends on the quantity and the length of time that the person has been smoking.

Emphysema and other pulmonary diseases can also develop. The main symptoms of this are a reduction in lung capacity so that the person may experience shortness of breath when exerting themselves. They are also more susceptible to bronchitis and other ailments where the lungs become congested.

Research also suggests that cardiovascular problems can be increased by smoking. This includes atherosclerosis which in bad cases can lead to strokes and heart attacks. Thinking suggests that nicotine, an addictive stimulant may contribute to this problem by triggering the release of hormones, like adrenaline and cortisol, into the body. Too much of these hormones can change the homeostasis of the body which can lead to a host of other problems including cardiovascular diseases.

Other health problems that may be caused or exacerbated by continued smoking include simple infections to psychological problems.

After the health implications of smoking there is also the cost. This is especially the case in developed nations where taxes on cigarettes are high. In developing nations, cigarettes still remain  fairly cheap and unsurprisingly the rate of smoking is rising.
